Become Familiar with Animal Italian Charms

Have you ever heard of animal Italian charms?  If you are a jewelry lover, you might have stumbled across the term once or twice, but if you are a novice, the odds are pretty good that you have never encountered it. These lovely pieces of jewelry have a long tradition amongst those who have fallen in love with animal Italian charms and it is not unusual to see them traded back and forth amongst aficionados. The little animals that they depict – be it horses, dogs, cats, fishes or even more mythical creatures – may be the most beloved pieces of jewelry to date!

If you love to wear jewelry pieces that depict an animal, then Italian charms are very likely the kinds of jewelry you will enjoy wearing.  As a matter of fact, animal Italian charms have become world famous! On silver backing, the often golden and white, blue or red animals make striking features on a bracelet.  The charming details often depicted in the renditions of dolphins, starfish, or even cats are rarely seen in other pieces of jewelry.

It is important to remember that animal Italian charms are designed to fit on modular link jewelry, and as such the sizing of the pieces is important. It would not do to have a variety of links of different sizes and weights, thereby compromising the light-weight properties of such charm bracelets. Instead, animal Italian charms are usually about 9mm in size plus or minus 1.5 mm.  Men prefer to wearer larger charms, while children usually wear smaller ones. While it is not unusual for American men to wear jewelry, it is a sign of the times that this Italian favorite finally has found its way into genuine acceptance of both men and women.

Animal Italian charms come in a wide variety of styles as well.  While animal depictions are the general motif, some renditions are more stylized while others are true to nature. The more expensive charms will feature intricate detail work, such as finely carved feathers, painstakingly recreated scales, or even detailed fur.  Generally, however, these pieces are considered costume jewelry, and therefore the detail work is limited. Sometimes these bracelets will be part or a watchband.  In these cases the charms are made of 18 karat gold mounted on stainless steel with removable links in between.  Since there are so many varieties available, this kind of jewelry is truly appropriate for all occasions and pocket books.

Of course, while animal Italian charms are all the rage, the market has been expanded for the American taste.  Here you will be able to purchase charms that depict the symbol of your favorite college, the mascot of your favorite football team, or any other set of characters.  Individual letters will also make for a wonderful display around your wrist, or, as more and more fashion conscious teenagers are currently displaying, around your waist!  Yes, it is true that charms may now be worn as belts.  Of course, in this it is a good idea to combine two or three strands to form a wider belt and to reduce the risk of breaking.

Another way that young people have found for wearing these charms is in combination with other jewelry, such as Pandora Beads.  If you choose to mix and match different kinds of jewelry, make sure that the links are strong and that the proportions fit, so that you do justice to each kind of jewelry.
